Surgeon and hospital administrator Dr. Wes Stephen is returning from Burlington in September to take on a key leadership role at Hamilton Health Sciences.

HHS announced Thursday Stephen will be its next chief operating officer and executive vice- president of clinical operations starting Sept. 18.

“I’m very glad to be returning home to HHS,” Stephen said. “I recognize the challenges that lay ahead and I am confident we can overcome them because the physicians and staff at HHS are world class and are totally committed to continuing to provide high quality, safe care to their patients.”

Stephen is taking the reins from one of Hamilton’s most influential health leaders as Brenda Flaherty retires after 37 years in health care.

Stephen is currently chief of staff at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington. His last job at HHS was surgeon-in-chief from 2008 to 2013.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Stephen back to the HHS family,” said CEO Rob MacIsaac. “As a physician leader and administrator, he will add unmatched skills and knowledge to our senior leadership group.”
