Take away their calculators

RE: Math problems in schools

I have a great idea that might help with our children not being able to do math. Start with the basics and take away the calculators, make them use their brains.

If you can’t do the basics without assistance how are you supposed to learn higher mathematics? I very often run into young people working in retail that, when the cash register, for whatever reason, fails to tell them how much change to give cannot figure it out, I find this appalling, this is basic math and these teens don’t know it.

Forget blaming tests, teachers, students or parents. Our system needs to get back to teaching the basics. Diana MacKenzie, Hamilton
