The Buddy Bench

The Hamilton Spectator - - HEALTH - BY TATUM ROBERTSON, GRADE 8

Remember how enjoyable recess was when you were a kid? Running around, playing outside or walking and talking. It didn’t matter what you did as long as you were with your friends. But what would you do if you had no friends? If you were getting bullied or teased at recess? Recess wouldn’t be your favourite part of the day. Well, Annunciation of Our Lord Catholic Elementary School is trying to change that with the introduction of the buddy bench. The buddy bench is a handcrafted and colourful representation of love, compassion, empathy, understanding, and kindness. It’s a safe place for kids in need of a friend to go. When you see someone sitting on the bench you go and you talk to them, see what’s bugging them, and invite them to play. This is one way that Annunciation is trying to put an end to bullying and it is a positive addition that has brought kindness to our schoolyard. Our former vice-principal said it best when he said, “Sometimes, you just need a friend.”
