My favourite thing

The Hamilton Spectator - - HEALTH - BY TALIA SANFILIPPO, GRADE 7

On Thursday, October 19th, Annunciation of Our Lord Catholic Elementary School had a visitor named Laura Bromwich. Laura is a silkscreen printer from DVSA (Dundas Valley School of Art) where she teaches and works with silkscreen printing. Laura taught us about silkscreen printing and how to paint with watercolours. First, she showed us one of her silkscreen prints because we would be using it as a template for when we did our silkscreen print.

To start our prints, Laura showed us how to use and blend watercolours. I painted my page dark pink, yellow ochre, and black, which turned out to look very fall-like. After that we let our paintings dry for about 15 minutes.

Then, Laura demonstrated to us how to put the ink on the painted and dried paper. She then called us up one by one to ink our papers. First, we put the ink onto the silkscreen and we squeegeed the ink across it which is called a flood, causing it to spread the ink out. Then we used more strength and pushed the ink back the other way. After we finished that step, we used a blow dryer to fully dry our artwork. Once we finished that she asked us to think of a title for our print and then on the left side put 1/1 because our prints were original copies.

In closing, today was such a fun and enjoyable day to just relax and do one of my favourite things…ART!!
