NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND ACTION ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Photos from local events:
The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women service was held at the Native Women’s Centre Wednesday. Left, candles were lit to remember the 14 victims killed by a gunman at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989. Photos of the some of the victims were on display. Bottom right, Christine Shawana was a friend of Tashina General, who was murdered in 2008. Shawana says she is still taken back when she sees her friend’s face as part of the display of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women which was on display in the Ceremonial Room at McMaster’s Indigenous Studies Department, part of the university’s Day of Remembrance remembrance commemoration. Bottom left, students walk under one of dozens of red dresses hung around the McMaster campus in the university’s observance of the Day of Remembrance. McMaster was also remembering the 1,200 or more Indigenous women who have been murdered or remain missing. For more photos, go to thespec.com.
