RE: Canada tests ‘basic income’ effect on poverty amid lost jobs (Nov. 30)

The Hamilton Spectator - - OPINION -

What if the headline read “Canada tests ‘low income’ effect on those with adequate and spectacular income and jobs.” It will be a three-year study — part of an experiment to see what effect freezing all assets plus the loss of 75 to 80 per cent of regular income will have on those of us fortunate enough to be able to go to sleep each night without the worry of trying to choose whether to buy food or a winter coat or to pay the $50 phone bill or the rent or the $20 school fee for a trip. How people respond will be closely watched. Will it make a difference in terms of education for the kids, better health, job prospects? Remember it will take three years to determine this! Gayle Cornell Schaming, Grimsby
