Man, 72, struck in crosswalk, suffers life-threatening injuries
A 72-year-old man remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries after he and another pedestrian were hit while walking in a crosswalk in front of McMaster University Medical Centre.
Police were called to the scene on University Avenue, near Forsyth Avenue South, around 7:24 a.m. Friday, Const. Jerome Stewart said.
The 72-year-old man was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and a 58-year-old man suffered minor injuries, Stewart said.
Investigators believe both men were in the crosswalk when they were hit by a BMW driven by a 60year-old Hamilton man. The driver remained at the scene and co-operated with police.
At the scene, a black backpack and umbrella could be seen lying on the sidewalk near the crosswalk.
The collision reconstruction unit is investigating. It was dark and raining at the time — both are possible factors. Speed and alcohol are not considered factors.
