Man, 72, struck in cross­walk, suf­fers life-threat­en­ing in­juries

A 72-year-old man re­mains in hospi­tal with life-threat­en­ing in­juries af­ter he and an­other pedes­trian were hit while walk­ing in a cross­walk in front of McMaster Univer­sity Med­i­cal Cen­tre.

Po­lice were called to the scene on Univer­sity Av­enue, near Forsyth Av­enue South, around 7:24 a.m. Fri­day, Const. Jerome Ste­wart said.

The 72-year-old man was trans­ported to hospi­tal with life-threat­en­ing in­juries and a 58-year-old man suf­fered mi­nor in­juries, Ste­wart said.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors be­lieve both men were in the cross­walk when they were hit by a BMW driven by a 60year-old Hamil­ton man. The driver re­mained at the scene and co-op­er­ated with po­lice.

At the scene, a black back­pack and um­brella could be seen ly­ing on the side­walk near the cross­walk.

The col­li­sion re­con­struc­tion unit is in­ves­ti­gat­ing. It was dark and rain­ing at the time — both are pos­si­ble fac­tors. Speed and al­co­hol are not con­sid­ered fac­tors.
