Centennial S.S. graduate selected for rugby squad
Belleville native Sara Svoboda is among 32 players named to the Canadian Ravens women’s Rugby League national team for the 2017 World Cup, Nov. 16-Dec. 2 in Australia. Svoboda, a graduate of Centennial Secondary School, is currently playing OUA Rugby Union for the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton. Rugby League is a 13-a-side version of the rugby code, with other differences from the 15-per-side Rugby Union style which is predominant in Canada. Ravens head coach Mike Castle said members of the 32-player roster have successfully demonstrated the ability to transition from Rugby Union to Rugby League. “I’ve been extremely impressed with not only the talent and athleticism, but also the eagerness to learn the game across the board,” said Castle. Svoboda is one of eight players from Ontario to be named to the national squad. B.C. leads with 12; nine hail from Alberta. In Rugby Union, Svoboda has represented Canada at the U20 level. The 2017 tournament will mark the debut of a Canadian women’s team at the Rugby League world championships.
