MacLeod going ‘ loonie’ for Gleaners

The Intelligencer (Belleville) - - NEWS - INTELLIGENCER STAFF

Local author Hilary MacLeod will put on her lobster outfit to sign books and toss loonies into the Gleaners Food Bank cashbox at Chapters.

MacLeod won the CBC Bookie award for her first mystery novel, Revenge of the Lobster Lover, in 2011. She’s just released her sixth in the series, Cod Only Knows, and she’s prepared to sign copies, claws and all, between 11 a. m. and 2 p. m. on Saturday, Nov. 18. She’ll also donate a loonie to the Gleaners Food Bank if you smile for the camera with her in her lobster outfit.

“As you can see, I’ll do just about anything for my books. Of course, the idea is to draw attention to them,” she says, “but I’m hoping it’ll be an expensive idea for me. Perhaps some readers will join me and toss in a loonie or two as well, but I’m not asking them to.”

What she is asking is that people take a photo with her as the Lobster Lass and, if they wish, share it on social media. She wouldn’t mind if readers took a bookmark – and a look at her books.

“I’ll be going to the bank on Friday to stock up on loonies.”

She’s already poised to toss one in the til.

CJBQ’s Freddy Vette joined her several years ago as she adorned the costume.

“Freddy was the first one to be photographed with me in this outfit,” she said. “So I have a loonie set aside with his name on it.”

MacLeod is a former CBC broadcaster and Media Studies Professor at Loyalist College, and the author of The Shore mystery series, which takes place in Prince Edward Island. The books, in sequence, are Revenge of the Lobster Lover, Mind Over Mussels, All is Clam, Something Fishy, Bodies and Sole and Cod Only Knows.

MacLeod has lived in the Quinte area for 30 years.

Local author Hilary MacLeod will donate one dollar to Gleaners for every photo taken of she and a reader at her upcoming book signing. MacLeod, a few years back, was joined by CJBQ personality Freddy Vette.
