Williams named to national tap team

The Intelligencer (Belleville) - - NEWS - INTELLIGENCER STAFF

Countless hours of practice has paid off for Jessica Williams.

The 14- year- old Grade 9 student of Campbellford District High School has earned herself a spot on the Canadian National Junior Tap Team for the International Dance Organization ( IDO) World Tap Dance Championship set for Nov. 26 to Dec. 2 in Riesa, Germany.

Williams currently dances at the Ireland Academy of Dance in Belleville. She was scouted and invited to audition for Team Canada Dance during one of her competitions in Hamilton. She auditioned for Team Canada and successfully cracked the lineup. The team will travel to Riesa November 25.

Williams has been dancing since she was four years old and today trains five- days- a- week in Belleville. She has done competi- tive dance throughout Ontario, but this is her first national or international competition.

The IDO has a membership of more than 90 nations, representing over 250,000 dancers from six continents. The World Dance Championship format is Olympicstyle with only one gold, silver and bronze being presented on the podium with the world champions’ national anthem being played as the top three medalist flags are raised. The best dancers from around the world will be competing for the World Champion title.

This honour comes with a lot of hard work and dedication. Not only are the dancers training and practicing at their home studio for many hours each week, but they are required to travel to Cambridge for Team Canada practices. Williams and her teammates have been practicing every weekend under the supervision of their choreographer, Matthew Clarke, to prepare for this international competition.

Team director Bonnie Dyer said Canada has been quite successful in all dance disciplines at the event, “mainly due to the high standard of training that local studios offer. It is also great to see the best of the best in Canada that come from various studios all working together as one team with one goal, and that is to represent Canada.”
