After trying out a few paths in her youth, Mary Gauthier found the perfect career in education. Now Executive Director at the Wernham West Centre for Learning at Upper Canada College, Gauthier discovered her love for teaching at Ryerson University in the early childhood education program. She continued her training in special education courses over the years, including programs on dyslexia and dispute resolution. “Not only did I love teaching,” she says, “I loved learning.” Now she brings that love of learning to the centre, where she works with teachers and students through planning and strategic meetings. She helps to develop the school’s educational approach, and her department regularly works with teachers to facilitate teaching learning skills. Gauthier says her own approach to education has evolved over her teaching career and that it’s not about “telling” students how they can improve or determining what they need. “Education is more about asking the right questions and listening to what students are saying,” she says. Gauthier notes the importance of “taking time to develop a relationship, to develop trust, to let students set their own goals, and then support them. It results in students being proud of their own achievements,” she

says.
