KAWARTHA LAKES - Kawartha Lakes firefighters could be coming to your door to check for working smoke alarms as part of their annual door-to-door campaign.

The campaign runs from June until the end of September. Firefighters will be going door to door on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. until dusk, in Lindsay.

In Bobcaygeon and Omemee areas, the hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and possibly evenings and weekends. The campaign will be run for the months of July and August in other participating areas in the City of Kawartha Lakes evenings and weekends

Fire officials reminded residents and seasonal visitors that smoke alarms are a must in your home or cottage. Fires can move so fast that even if a fire started in another room while you are home and awake, without a working smoke alarm you may not have enough time to get to safety.

Smoke alarms are required by law on every level of your home and outside of all sleeping areas; failure to comply could result in a $ 235 ticket per offence.
