The effect

The London Free Press - - ONTARIO -

How would volunteer firefighters be affected?

• There are 178 volunteer firefighter departments in Ontario, mostly rural.

• Most volunteer firefighters are paid a stipend that differs by municipality. In StrathroyCaradoc, for instance, firefighters receive two points for responding to a call and one point for each half hour worked. Each point pays out $14.42.

• If the labour bill passes, each of Strathroy-Caradoc’s 78 volunteer firefighters would receive a minimum of eight points a day, every day of the year, costing the municipality $3.3 million a year, up from $608,000.

• Municipalities with both full and part-time firefighter staff would be required to pay volunteers the same rate as regular staff.
