School bus incident in Yellowhead County
At approximately 4pm on Monday, December 12, 2016, students travelling home on a school bus travelling on Highway 748 were involved in a minor collision on its regular route from Edson schools. Emergency services personnel assessed all people involved as a pre-cautionary measure before students were released onsite to another bus to be taken home although some families chose to pick up their students onsite. Five students were sent to the local hospital for further assessment as a pre-cautionary measure before being released that evening.
We take very seriously the trust that families place into us in ensuring that their children are kept safe and secure, especially when travelling on our school buses.
Grande Yellowhead does have emergency crisis protocols to follow including a call out to 911 services although each situation is unique, and the steps taken may be different each time. However, at no time should any child or staff member under our care be subject to any undue risk, including access to emergency medical assistance if needed.
When incidents such as Monday’s accident, are currently under internal investigation as well as from the R.C.M.P., it is not the division’s policy to discuss details until the investigations are completed. On Tuesday, December 13th, Grande Yellowhead contacted Yellowhead County representatives to arrange a meeting for Thursday, December 15 to specifically discuss what had happened. We also welcome the opportunity to investigate any changes in protocols to ensure alignment of future expectations from both our organizations. We continue to look forward to working together with all our community partners to ensure the health and safety of all.
