Edson Town Council updates
Oct. 24 organizational meeting
Swearing in of Council. Town of Edson CAO Mike Derricott opened the meeting and introduced RCMP
Staff Sergeant Peter King to swear in Council. Following the oath of Office, Council took their seats around the table and new Mayor Kevin Zahara took over as chair.
Council Boards and Committees. One of the duties as mayor is to appoint Councillors to specific boards and committees. While there was some discussion on the removal of the Trans Canada Yellowhead Highway Association from the committee list, the updated schedule was approved. The new list is attached.
Subdivision and Development Appeal Board. Council approved the following members to the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board; Debbie Burgess (Board Member)
Maria Carter (Board Member) Jan Karasek (Board Member) Val Bezushko (Alternate Board Member)
Douglas Jackson (Alternate Board Members)
Library Board. Council has extended Debra EdeyHalterman’s term on the Library Board for one year, expiring October 31, 2018.
Meeting Schedule. The Council meeting schedule remains the same with Regular Council meetings being held the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7:30 pm in the Council Chambers of the Edson Civic Building, and Committee of the Whole meetings being held the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers of the Edson Civic Building.
Deputy Mayor. Council has agreed to continue rotating the position of Deputy Mayor every four months in alphabetical order. Following this, Councillor Baier was appointed as Deputy Mayor commencing immediately and expiring the first day of March 2018.
Legislating Responsibilities. Council received a memo from CAO Mike Derricott, outlining the legislative responsibilities of Council, as information. Oct. 24 meeting
FortisAlberta Franchise Fee. Council reviewed the Fortis Franchise Fee and kept it the current rate of 5 per cent. The franchise fee is a levy the Town of Edson charges Fortis for the right to operate within the municipally owned roadways/lands, which is in turn charged to the consumers. The Town of Edson uses these fees for line burial projects and LED conversion of street lights. Council has the opportunity to review franchise fees annually.
Remembrance Day Parade. Council gave approval to the Royal Canadian Legion Joe Wynne Branch 51 to hold their annual Remembrance Day Parade on November 11, 2017. The parade will start at 10:00 am at the Town parking lot behind the Legion, march down 50th Street to 4th Avenue, west on 4th Avenue to 51st Street, north of 51st Street past the cenotaph and into the Legion parking lot.
Library Board Appointments. The following residents have been appointed to the Edson and District Library Board with terms starting immediately and ending October 2020;
