Try curling being offered at the Espanola Curling Club
With the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang becoming the focus of the sporting world, the Espanola Curling Club is offering adults two different opportunities to get to know one of the most popular Olympic sports a little bit better – curling.
Newcomers who haven’t had the opportunity to settle into the hack and deliver a curling stone or want to better understand the rules of this exciting sport have two chances to explore the game.
The Espanola Curling Club will be offering a ‘Try Curling’ day on Tuesday, Feb. 20, from 7 – 8:30 p.m.
“Curling is such a fun and social activity, but it can be intimidating for those who have never had a chance to try it,” said Jeannie Lefebvre, long-time Espanola Curling Club member and one of the facilitators of this event along with her husband Marc. “This session will give people a terrific opportunity to learn to throw a rock with a balanced delivery and best of all – it’s free!”
“Adults who want to take their learning to a new level can then sign up for the four-week Adult Learn To Curl program,” said Marc Lefebvre, who is on the executive for the men’s league of the Espanola Curling Club. “By the time someone has gone through the Learn to Curl sessions, they’ll be ready to join in any one of the leagues at the Espanola Curling Club when the next curling season begins in the fall.”
The Adult Learn to Curl sessions will go every Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 27 until March 28. The cost is $120 for the Learn to Curl sessions.
The Espanola Curling Club offers three different leagues for its members to choose from: the open/ mixed league on Wednesday nights, the men’s league on Thursday nights, and the Sturling league where curlers play modified curling rules on two-person teams. There is also afternoon master’s curling for older adults with a little more time on their hands on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Any adult who is interested in participating in either the Try Curl or the Learn to Curl sessions can find registration opportunities on the Espanola Curling Club Facebook page or can call the club at 705-8692133 and leave a message. Registrants need to bring some clean indoor running shoes to participate.
