Trenton Elementary also to offer pre-primary

The News (New Glasgow) - - PICTOU COUNTY -

Trenton Elementary School has been added as a host site for the new provincial pre-primary program.

Due to high registration numbers, the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board recently received approval from the province to add an additional pre-primary site, allowing for additional children to benefit from the program.

“We had high registration numbers in the New Glasgow-Trenton area and wanted to allow as many children as possible to avail of this program. I think the high registration numbers are an indicator of the interest in the program in this area,” said CCRSB spokesperson Darcy MacRae.

The program is expected to start in the last week of September.

New Glasgow Academy was one of the sites announced by the province in June when the program was introduced, and at the time was the only Pictou County location for the program. One class began there earlier this week, and the second is expected to begin operating the last week of the month.

The province is phasing in the pre-primary program over four years. Eventually it will be available to all four-year-olds in Nova Scotia. It will follow the Nova Scotia Early Learning Curriculum Framework, a child-centred, playbased program that supports the early learning and development of children the year before they start school.

“We look forward to opening all of the pre-primary programs later this month. It is a lot of work to get the centres ready, but we know they will provide fouryear-olds in our area with a great foundation for their school years ahead,” said MacRae.

Additional information on how parents and guardians within the Trenton Elementary catchment area can register their child for pre-primary will be available shortly, the school board stated in a release.
