For­est fire burns acre in Trafal­gar

TRAFAL­GAR, N.S. — Four Pic­tou County fire de­part­ments were fight­ing a for­est fire in Trafal­gar on Tues­day.

Six fire fight­ers with the De­part­ment of Lands and Forestry as well 20 fire­fight­ers re­sponded to a call to Perch Lake Road Tues­day af­ter­noon to for­est fire that burnt about an acre of land. The cause of the fire is un­known at this time and un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion.

Pic­tou County fire­fight­ers as well Lands and Forestry spent days in Au­gust 2016 fight­ing a for­est fire in the same area. It had burnt 10 hectares of for­est.

A lands and forestry spokesper­son said the woody de­bris on the for­est floor and the trees in parts of Pic­tou County are crit­i­cally dry and re­quire sig­nif­i­cant rain to re­duce the wild­fire risk. In Nova Sco­tia south shore, Lands and Forestry crews were kept busy late last week and over the past week­end ex­tin­guish­ing four fires in the Oak Park, Oak Park Lake, Pub­nico Lake/Bar­ring­ton River ar­eas in south­west­ern Nova Sco­tia.
