Aussie captures Canadian championsh­ip

Sue Wooster wins senior division by one stroke — and the Mid-Amateur in a playoff

Sue Wooster of Australia shot a 75 in the final round and won both titles in the three-day Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur and Senior Championsh­ip at Lookout Point Country Club course in Fonthill Thursday.

It was the second year in a row the internatio­nal player has captured the senior crown. Thursday Wooster finished with a three-round score of 226, one stroke better than Wednesday’s senior leader Mary Ann Hayward of St. Thomas, who shot 78 in the final round.

Wooster also won the MidAmateur title at Lookout on the fourth playoff hole by besting Christian Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C.

Wooster, as 2018 Canadian Women’s Senior Champion, will receive another exemption to the 2018 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championsh­ip.

Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke was third in the senior division with a score of 288. Judith Kyrinis of Thornhill was fourth at with a 299 and Amy Ellertson of Free Union, Va., was fifth at 229. Tara Fleming had the best score Thursday with a 74. She finished tied for 10th.

More than 150 golfers entered the event from as far in the U.S. as Florida and Texas and Australia.

Local golfers included Sharon Montgomery-Greenwood of Niagara-on-the-Lake and Karen Vamplew of Smithville. Shelley Bauer, Carol Cort, Chris Critelli and Cindy Wegg are all from St. Catharines. Stefi Markovich, Emily Zwier, Stefi Markovich and Nancy Bridgeman represent Welland. Amanda Garner and Chantelle Proulx are from Pelham. Martha Cruikshank is from Niagara Falls.

Markovich finished tied for seventh in the Mid-Amateur with a score of 233 that included a 74 in the second round.

Critelli was tied for 30th with a three-day score of 250.

Wegg of St. Catharines also made it through the final day of play in the senior women. She finished 70th with a 275.

Zwier played all three rounds and was 53rd in the Mid-Amateur finishing all three rounds with a 288. Proulx was 54th with a 282.

The 54-hole tournament in Fonthill was the 48th playing of the Canadian Women’s Mid-Am and Senior Championsh­ip.
