The Town of Bonavista’s current deputy mayor, Doug Robbins, says he wants to continue on council for a third term after the upcoming municipal election.

Robbins says while many people have been asking if he would be interested in making a bid for mayor, and — as deputy mayor these past several years — he enjoyed filling in for current mayor Betty Fitzgerald on occasion, but he wants to try for council again instead.

“I just don’t want to give it up yet,” Robbins told The Packet last Wednesday.

Bonavista’s official nomination date for candidates is on Sept. 5.

“I like to help people. If people have their concerns I like to bring it to the table,” he said.

Robbins says he’s always been a volunteer for the town — for 52 years, in fact — and he’s looking forward to a possible four more years. He is also well known as the former stadium manager for the town for 28 years, until he retired eight years ago.

The municipal elections in towns around the province will be on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
