Russell says lack of interest ‘a disturbing trend’
They are Lloyd Parrott, Rod Nicholl, and John Pickett.
Russell told The Packet he was both surprised and disappointed with the results.
“It certainly reflects a disturbing trend in the province whereby councils are getting elected by acclamation … it certainly doesn’t bode well for getting people out and actively involved in municipal politics.”
He says he was originally expecting another candidate for both mayor and several for council. As for the reason for the low level of interest, he speculated perhaps residents were happy with the previous council, and potential candidates may have been turned off by the amount of time need to volunteer.
But Russell says he also thinks it’s important for the people to have a choice for their municipal government.
While he says he looks forward to meeting with the new council — he’s glad to have several councillors returning, and some with previous council experience joining — he’s also sad to see some of the other former members leave the table.
“I look forward to sitting down with the others and mapping out where we go in the next four years.”
