Let the breakfast clubs begin

The Packet (Clarenville) - - EDITORIAL -

As the volunteer chair of the Kids Eat Smart (KES) Foundation Newfoundland and Labrador, board of directors, I am always amazed at the impact our 248 KES clubs throughout the province have on our school-aged children.

Principals continually tell us that they see many positive changes in the climate of their schools because of their breakfast clubs.

Teachers report better behaved children, increased attendance rates and more focus on learning because children are not coming into the classroom hungry.

To ensure all kids can reap the benefits of the breakfast club, some volunteers even stay behind after the bell rings to ensure that breakfast is available to any child who arrives late.

Every school day, with the help of 6,100 volunteers and financial support from the government of Newfoundland and Labrador, our generous donors, partners and corporate sponsors, we serve more than 25,000 meals to school-aged children and youth throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

That is quite an accomplishment and we are truly thankful to all who give so generously to make this happen.

The new school year is upon us. We look forward to continuing to serve the children of our province ensuring every child has access to healthy food at school, at no cost to children or their families, so they are well nourished and ready to learn.

We can only do this with the support of our generous donors and dedicated volunteers; we look forward to another successful school year.

Sincerely,

Gerry Mayo
