This past municipal election marked an end of an era, as Bonavista Mayor Betty Fitzgerald bid farewell to political life, choosing not run for another term.

Fitzgerald had been mayor of the community for 20 years before deciding to step down.

On Saturday evening, Oct. 7, Fitzgerald held a retirement party at the Bonavista Fire Hall, surrounded by family, friends and supporters.

She told The Packet she was glad to finally be stepping back from the forefront.

“When you get to a certain point in your life … it’s time to look at what you’re going to do in the future and let somebody else take the course and go with it,” said Fitzgerald.

She wishes the town the best of luck in the future, however, this retirement doesn’t mean she will be stepping away from volunteering, including work on many groups in town, like the Matthew Legacy and Health Care committees.

“I wish all the best for the new council and mayor and I hope they will do a great job for the people … and continue working together for the betterment of the people.”
