Alberto Wareham, president of Icewater Seafood in Arnold’s Cove says regardless of the news that the northern cod stock has declined since last year, he’s still seeking funding for a $15 million three-year expansion plan for his business.

“We’re continuing with our investment plans providing we can get the funding approved,” Wareham told The Packet last week.

In a technical briefing in late March Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) scientist Karen Dwyer, stock assessment biologist for northern cod, said the northern cod spawning stock biomass had declined about 30 per cent from 2017 to 2018. A one-year projection shows a high probability of continued decline in the stock for 2019.

The overall stock is at 37 percent
