40 Years ago New gym under construction at Southern Harbour
The town of Southern Harbour will soon have a new gymnasium. The gymnasium located in the Civic Centre is presently under construction. This project is sponsored by the Southern Harbour town Council, the Winter capital works program and the Department of From the April 6, 1978, edition of The Packet Rehabilitation and Recreation.The purpose of this project is to improve recreational facilities and to complete the gymnasium
The project will cost $124,184 with $50,000 coming from rehabilitation and recreation and $74,184 coming from winter capital works. Town manager John Payne says when the gymnasium is completed it will also be the completion of the Civic Centre which is situated in the new housing area of Southern Harbour. The 60x20 building, which was first used in 1974, so far has cost $350,000.
Random island boys basketball team showed an excellent level of determination, good sportsmanship, and very good skills to finish with a 2–2 record in the recent provincial A tournament in Musgrave Harbor. In game one Random Island defeated St. Bernard’s 74-65. In their second outing Random Island suffer their first defeat to Musgrave Harbour with a score of 84-48. Random Island’s third game in the round robin was probably the most exciting as they upset Botwood 79-77.
