40 Years ago New gym un­der con­struc­tion at South­ern Har­bour

The town of South­ern Har­bour will soon have a new gym­na­sium. The gym­na­sium lo­cated in the Civic Cen­tre is presently un­der con­struc­tion. This project is spon­sored by the South­ern Har­bour town Coun­cil, the Win­ter cap­i­tal works pro­gram and the De­part­ment of From the April 6, 1978, edi­tion of The Packet Re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion and Recreation.The pur­pose of this project is to im­prove re­cre­ational fa­cil­i­ties and to com­plete the gym­na­sium

The project will cost $124,184 with $50,000 com­ing from re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion and recreation and $74,184 com­ing from win­ter cap­i­tal works. Town man­ager John Payne says when the gym­na­sium is com­pleted it will also be the com­ple­tion of the Civic Cen­tre which is sit­u­ated in the new hous­ing area of South­ern Har­bour. The 60x20 build­ing, which was first used in 1974, so far has cost $350,000.


Ran­dom is­land boys bas­ket­ball team showed an ex­cel­lent level of de­ter­mi­na­tion, good sports­man­ship, and very good skills to fin­ish with a 2–2 record in the re­cent pro­vin­cial A tour­na­ment in Mus­grave Har­bor. In game one Ran­dom Is­land de­feated St. Bernard’s 74-65. In their sec­ond out­ing Ran­dom Is­land suf­fer their first de­feat to Mus­grave Har­bour with a score of 84-48. Ran­dom Is­land’s third game in the round robin was prob­a­bly the most ex­cit­ing as they up­set Bot­wood 79-77.
