Clarenville Ford Caribous and St. John’s Caps, along with officials and fans, shared a moment of silence to pay respect to the Saskatchewan Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team Saturday night, April 7, before beginning the first game of the Herder championship. Ten Broncos players, aged 16 to 21, their coach and assistant coach, and three staff members were killed Friday night, April 6, when a transport truck hit their bus at an intersection. Many schools and organizations in this area — including Heritage Collegiate, Random Island Academy, and the Bonavista-Trinity Minor Hockey Association — say they will have a special ‘jersey day’, Thursday, April 12, to pay their respect. At Confederation Building in St. John’s, flags have been lowered to half-mast. And beginning April 10, Confederation Building was lit in yellow and green, the colors of the Humboldt Broncos.
