Marchen, Wells to join Wall of Honour
The Peterborough Men’s Softball Association will add one of its best hitters and top pitchers to their Wall of Honour on Aug. 2. Greg Marchen was a first baseman and one of the city league’s top hitters of his era, said PMSA executive Clair Leahy. Wayne Wells was a dominant pitcher not only locally but on travelling teams across North America. Both men are members of the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame. Marchen and Wells will have plaques unveiled on the outfield fence at George (Red) Sullivan East City Bowl in a pre-game ceremony starting at 6:45 p.m. In the past the names of those being honoured were kept secret until the ceremony, but Leahy said he thinks it will help to attract a bigger crowd to advertise the names in advance. “I know I’ve had people tell me ‘Had I known it was going to be Randy Fife honoured, or whomever, I would have come out,” said Leahy. Marshalls has already clinched first place in the city league and have earned a bye directly to the best-of-seven final. Ricart’s holds a three-point lead on Terry’s Gas & Variety Slayers for second place in the three-team league. Those two teams will square off 7 p.m. Tuesday and a Ricart’s victory would clinch them second place and home-field advantage in a best-of-five semifinal between the two. That series would begin on Thursday. If the Slayers win Tuesday it will force the playing of one final regular season game between the same two clubs on Thursday to decide who gets home-field advantage for their playoff series. family’s love of harness racing and owns Cape Cod. “She was bought at Harrisburg as a yearling.
