The city’s first virtual reality gaming arcade has arrived.

The HTC Vive arcade opened last week at Dodo, a retail store on George St. near Hunter St.

It’s set up at the front of the shop and has access to more than 20 games.

Using a headset, players are brought into a virtual reality that allows them to experience the environment firsthand.

Store owner Todd Liang said virtual reality gaming has taken off in other cities and he wanted to bring it to Peterborough.

“I want Peterborough people to experience this new technology,” he said.

The downtown arcade shares Toronto Virtual Reality Arcade’s game library.

“Whatever Toronto has, we have,” Liang said.

There are variety of genres such as racing, dancing, horror and shooting games. And there are simulators, too, so players can ride rollercoasters from around the globe or try their hand at job like bartending or office work.

For first time users, Liang offers a 15-minute tutorial to get players up to speed.

He recommends groups of two to three people sign up for the arcade and it can be booked in 60 or 90 minute sessions.

Liang’s offering a half-price deal on bookings for the next month. After that, it’ll be $24.99 for 60 minutes and $34.99 for 90 minutes.

The virtual reality gaming arcade is the newest gaming addition to Dodo, which opened a year and a half ago. In January, Liang launched a video-game room in the shop’s basement and there’s also a board game area upstairs. Both are filled with games available to customers with the purchase of a drink.

Dodo sells Japaneses snacks and drinks, bubble tea and anime merchandise.

Since launching the gaming areas last month, Liang has been hosting video game tournaments every weekend.

The PS4, Wii U, Gamecube and gaming computers are also up for video-game party bookings.

Liang plans to have another HTC Vive headset soon and hopes to have a private virtual reality gaming party room set up in the basement of Dodo in the near future.

The storeowner is already addicted to virtual reality gaming himself, saying he’s played it everyday since he brought it in.

“I just cannot get out of the virtual reality world, it’s so real.”
