Blaze fills Smitty’s with heavy smoke
There was a fire at Smitty’s Family Restaurant on Thursday night.
The 139 George St. N. restaurant - which was closed for renovations in January - is across from the Holiday Inn.
City firefighters were called to the scene around 10:20 p.m. after witnesses saw smoke billowing from the building.
The restaurant was closed at the time the fire broke out.
George St. was closed from Townsend St. to Dalhousie St. (in front of the No Frills) while firefighters battled the blaze.
No flames were visible, shortly after firefighters arrived, but there was heavy smoke.
Platoon Chief Jeff Guest of Peterborough Fire Services said at about 11 p.m. that no one was hurt in the fire.
He said the fire was contained to one area of the building and that fire crews were ventilating the interior to rid the restaurant of smoke.
He didn’t comment on the extent of the damage or possible cause.
Guest said more details will be released Friday as the investigation continues.
