Ontario college teachers 68% in favour of strike
College teachers from across the province voted 68 per cent in favour of a strike mandate in a vote conducted Thursday. Staff at all 24 colleges across the province, including Fleming College in Peterborough, cast ballots to decide whether or not to give their union a strike mandate as contract negotiations continue. OPSEU’s bargaining unit chairwoman J.P. Hornick asked the more than 12,000 teachers it represents to support the strike mandate to give them more power when negotiating with the province. Hornick, however, said she remains hopeful that the strike mandate vote will not end up on the picket lines. College negotiators have offered a 7.5 per cent wage increase over four years increasing maximum wages for full-time instructors to $115,094 by 2020, Results of the vote were not available at press time.
