New zoo benches honour Examiner photographer, former managing editor
Two new park benches have been installed at the Riverview Park and Zoo, one in honour of a former managing editor of The Peterborough Examiner and the other to honour the paper’s long-time photographer. An anonymous donor asked that one bench be installed for Ed Arnold, the retired managing editor, and the other for Clifford Skarstedt Jr., the photojournalist. Jim Moloney, the manager and curator of the zoo, said the cost to the donor was about $3,000. The donor wanted to publicly recognize the two for their contribution to local journalism, he said. The two benches have been installed, and there are plaques indicating the tribute. They are located outside the washroom building, on opposite side from the splash pad. Moloney said that while many benches are dedicated to someone’s memory, some are meant as public recognition of achievement. This particular donor has done this sort of thing before, he said, and the idea is to highlight the contributions made by both Arnold and Skarstedt. It impressed him that the donor would want to show recognition in such a way. “It’s incredible,” Moloney said.
