Package containing $70K in drugs, tobacco seized at Warkworth prison
WARKWORTH -- Guards at Warkworth Institution have seized contraband with a value of $69.808.72, including 622 grams of marijuana and 423 grams of tobacco.
The items were seized after a package containing them was found on the perimeter of the medium security federal prison, located 60 kilometres southeast of Peterborough.
The seizure was made Jan. 4 after the prison was placed on lockdown, assistant warden Anne Marie Joyce stated Thursday.
The prison did not say how the package got there or whether any arrests have been made.
The lockdown was ordered to allow an exceptional search for contraband “to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone,” Joyce stated.
The lockdown has now been lifted after the exceptional search was completed, Joyce stated, allowing the prison to resume normal operations, including public visits.
Smoking has been banned in federal prisons since 2008.
