Heath Lear is still relatively new to this world but already he has shown incredible strength and determination.

At the tender age of nearly five months, Heath still has a big journey ahead of him. Heath was born with complex congenital heart disease.

On Oct. 4, he successfully underwent his second surgery at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.

The day following his surgery his Dad, Mark Lear posted on Facebook that Heath was feeding from a bottle and had his breathing tube taken out.

“One step at a time, one day at a time he’ll get through this and let us know when he’s ready to come home,” Lear said.

Last Thursday Heath was moved back to the cardiology ward where he started in a step down room where there’s one nurse for every two patients.

“He is progressing well so far, still in some pain and having some fluid build up but they’re working on that,” Lear told The Pilot from the hospital in Toronto.

Both Lear and Heath’s mother, Jessica Woolfrey, extended their appreciation to the Ronald McDonald House in Toronto and St. John’s as well.

“The Ronald McDonald house is an amazing place for families,” he said. “I can’t imagine being here in a hotel for an indefinite time. They take good care of us at the house.”

The family is taking Heath’s journey one step at a time. They are overwhelmed and appreciative of the support, well wishes and prayers for their son and a speedy recovery.

But Lear admitted it’s never easy to see your child go through what Heath has already gone through.

“It’s a big part of our life and his too,” he shared on Facebook with pictures of Heath prepped for surgery. “It’s a symbol of just how strong he really is and that he’s a superhero we get to call our son.”

He said the photos show people the real side of surgery and it isn’t all smiles, but a long recovery ahead for families who go through this with their children.

“For all the kids who go through children’s hospitals, this is life, and as real as life can get for any parent,” he said.

“All signs point in a positive direction though so we’re definitely happy about that and we’re still praying for a speedy and healthy recovery though of course,” Lear said. “He’s got a long road yet but he’s strong and will get through it.”
