Con­tin­u­ing the Fogo Process

Con­fer­ence to re­view past and fu­ture 50 years

FOGO IS­LAND, NL — Fogo Process 2067 and the Fogo Is­land Joint 50th An­niver­sary Plan­ning Com­mit­tee are plan­ning for the Fogo Is­land Fu­tures Com­mu­nity De­vel­op­ment Con­fer­ence and Think Tank.

The event is to be held on Fogo Is­land Oct. 19-22. Open to all res­i­dents of Fogo Is­land past and present, plus friends from Labrador and the North­ern Penin­sula, the con­fer­ence is part of a year­long se­ries of events com­mem­o­rat­ing the Fogo Process and the es­tab­lish­ment of the Fogo Is­land Co-op­er­a­tive So­ci­ety Ltd.

Coast of Bays— Cen­tral— Notre Dame MP Scott Simms will act as honorary chair. The con­fer­ence will be chaired by Ge­orge Lee, former as­so­ciate di­rec­tor, Me­mo­rial Univer­sity Ex­ten­sion Ser­vice.

The con­fer­ence has been de­signed, and is pre­sented by Fogo Process 2067, a not-for­profit com­mu­nity-based think tank, in part­ner­ship with the In­sti­tute for So­cial and Eco- nomic Re­search, MUN, Dr. Lisa Rankin, di­rec­tor. The con­fer­ence plan­ning com­mit­tee has col­lab­o­rated with Dr. Tony Fang, ( Stephen Jaris­lowsky Chair in Cul­tural and Eco­nomic Trans­for­ma­tion) and full pro­fes­sor, Depart­ment of Eco­nomics. Con­fer­ence plan­ning and im­ple­men­ta­tion has been greatly as­sisted by the Fogo Is­land Joint 50th An­niver­sary Plan­ning Com­mit­tee, con­sist­ing of the Fogo Is­land Co-op­er­a­tive So­ci­ety Ltd., the Shore­fast Foun­da­tion and the Town of Fogo Is­land.

The agenda will in­clude re­view­ing suc­cesses of the past 50 years, as well as ar­tic­u­lat­ing “lessons learned” that may be ap­pli­ca­ble to Fogo Is­land and be­yond dur­ing the next 50 years.

The open­ing theme of the con­fer­ence is “Where are we, and wither tend­ing,” and the fu­tures theme of the con­fer­ence is “A New Start for Ru­ral and Re­mote Com­mu­ni­ties through re­gion­al­iza­tion, green en­ergy and in­no­va­tive im­mi­gra­tion.”

In ad­di­tion to lo­cal, pro­vin­cial and fed­eral re­sources, the con­fer­ence will in­clude pre­sen­ta­tions by in­ter­na­tional par­tic­i­pants from China, Thai­land, and the U.S. The clos­ing ses­sion of the con­fer­ence will hon­our and present the “War­riors of Fogo” awards to the founders of the Fogo Is­land Im­prove­ment Com­mit­tee and the Fogo Is­land Pro­duc­ers Co-op­er­a­tive, who joined forces in the bat­tle to save Fogo Is­land from “re­set­tle­ment.”

A pre­miere screen­ing of the film “War­riors of Fogo,” di­rected by Emma Par­ent, edited by Justin Simms, and cre­ated and pri­vately funded by Ian Stra­chan, will be pre­sented.
