Lewisporte woman celebrates her 100th birthday
Eva Martin credits longevity to faith in God
LEWISPORTE, NL – As the old adage goes, if things get better with age, Eva Martin must be approaching magnificent as she celebrates her 100th birthday.
Martin, who was born and raised in Lewisporte and spent her entire life there raising a family of seven, celebrated her birthday a day early with a surprise party on Friday, Oct 20 at Pleasantview Manor.
Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even great- great- grandchildren, along with friends and staff of the manor, joined together to wish Martin a happy birthday and help her celebrate.
Martin told the Pilot her se- cret to reaching 100 years old is drinking elablossom tea her whole life and hard work, but most importantly, her faith in the Man above.
Martin has been a home league member of the Salvation Army church for 70 years and has devoted many hours to volunteering with her church.
“I’ve got very good memories… I’ve done a touch of everything,” Martin said.
Turning 100 calls for lots of celebration, cards and wellwishes from government officials and extended family, and parties. A week before Martin’s birthday, Pleasantview Manor took a photo of her holding a sign and asking for 100 likes and shares on Facbeook for her 100th birthday. Since the photo was posted, she’s gotten 2.8K likes and 3,342 shares.
“I didn’t know I was so good as I was,” she said of all the greetings and love she has received.
Martin says she never expected to live to be 100.
“I’d laugh at people when they’d say, ah you’ll be 100 years old,” she said, “but the Lord’s rewarding me.”
When Martin looks back over her 100 years she recalls wonderful memories of taking care of her family and helping bring children into the world many years ago.
“I’ve had a good life, I tell ya that,” she said.
