Scholarship fundraising goal exceeded
Over $80,000 will go towards the futures of Lewisporte Collegiate graduates
While the Lewisporte Collegiate Scholarship Fundraising Committee goal was $25,000, the end result to the gala/dinner Saturday evening was a total in excess of $80,000.
Business and individuals stepped up to show their support for this new initiative that will see scholarships awarded to qualifying students as they graduate from Lewisporte Collegiate. The total includes funds of around $15,000 from the Ryan Holloway Fund.
Collegiate school counsellor and committee liasion Angie Wilmott noted that Lewisporte Collegiate, with a student population of 270, includes students noted the sense of community extends beyond Lewisporte on this initiative as people show their support.
While it may be considered a rural school, Lewisporte Collegiate offers a full curriculum and many activities for students to be involved in such as an award-winning music program and varsity sports.
Collegiate principal Krista Freake, who was not in attendance as she was coaching a volleyball team this past weekend, praised the school and its students.
“Lewisporte Collegiate prides itself on high academic achievement,” Freake noted in a statement she provided. “Lewisporte Collegiate graduated nearly 50 per cent of students with honours over the past two years, making it the highest achieving high school in the province by 13 per cent last year.
“We are proud to support our student population in pushing them to reach their potential, to challenge themselves and to explore the various opportunities available to them here and outside of our community,” noting that efforts like those of the Scholarship Committee will help in making that possible.
Guest speaker General Rick Hillier (Retired), was the guest speaker for the evening. The Campbellton native spoke on the people who have inspired him over the years in his military career (see the Pilot Nov. 8 edition for more on this and why Hillier encourages people to take part in Nov. 11 ceremonies). He noted that the people supporting the scholarship fund can inspire future graduates, and that the financial support they offer today will be important to these youth in pursuing their future goals, “so they can go out and change the world.”
