LEWISPORTE, NL — Seventeen-year-old Peter Welsh of Lewisporte has released his debut single – with the help of St. John’s-based music producer Peter Newman, also from Lewisporte.

A Grade 12 student at Lewisporte Collegiate, Peter said his song “Shutter N’ Shake” compares young love to taking instant photographs.

“I like to consider my music rock-inspired pop, rather than pop-inspired rock and roll,” he said during a recent interview.

Newman divides his time between St. John’s and Nashville. Peter said thanks to Newman’s Nashville connections, several industry professionals from Nashville and Los Angeles worked on his song, including

bass player Mark Hill and drummer Steve Brewster, both from Nashville. Paul Lani of Los Angeles was the song’s mix engineer.

Newman describes Peter as a fantastic songwriter, singer, musician and performer.

“The song showcases a mix of

pop, rock and dance elements, from a young artist, exhibiting very mature song-writing and performance skills,” Newman said via e-mail.

About Peter

Peter has come a long way with his music since he started writing songs in Grade 4.

His band Coastal Heartache took second place in the popular K Rock Battle of the Bands earlier this year. At that time the band was known as “Radio Radar.”

Peter had about 10 songs he’d written to choose from for his debut track. He enjoyed going to St. John’s and working with Newman on “Shutter N’ Shake.”

When asked if he’s had a mentor for his music, Peter gives a nod to Lewisporte Collegiate’s music specialist, Adam Baxter.

“I’ve got to thank (Baxter) for encouraging me. And I’ve had a lot of support from my friends and my family,” Peter said.

Peter’s parents are Byron and Jennifer Welsh.

Peter enjoys listening to all types of music genres and creates his lyrics from his own personal experiences.

“My ideas are taken from my life. Being out around and being young,” he said.

He believes his songs are tunes other young people can relate to, he said.

“I’m hoping that this song will connect to the majority of my age group and hopefully launch a good start to a music career for me,” Peter said.

Peter Welsh has launched his music career with the release of his debut single, “Shutter N’ Shake.”
