Best gift of all

Before the frenzy of the holiday season takes over, have you thought about doing a home inventory? Even if you have the comfort of good property insurance, most of us don’t realize how traumatic it can be to deal with theft or major damage to our home.

“Trying to remember all of the items of value can add to an already stressful event,” says Wayne Ross, an insurance and claims expert at Aviva Canada.“Preparing and safekeeping a thorough inventory is one of the best ways to prepare yourself. In addition to ensuring the right amount of insurance, an inventory will help to settle your insurance claim faster.”

Sure, but who has time to go through every item in their home?

Ross points out that the task need not be onerous and can be as easy as taking a video account of each room in your home. Many insurance brokers provide pre-prepared content lists that can act as a helpful starting point.

No matter whether you conduct a video or written inventory of your home, don’t forget to keep the list in a safety deposit box or in another safe place away from your house. It is also wise to keep a record of your legal documents in a safe place, such as birth certificates, passports and financial documents, such as bank account and insurance policies.
