Mongomo a monster in UNBC victory
Beating the UBC Thunderbirds once was sweet for the UNBC Timberwolves.
Puling off a double whammy on consecutive nights for their Saturday dessert – a 79-61 win over the T-birds – was absolutely decadent.
T-wolves forward Maria Mongomo turned in her best game of the season, shredding the Tbirds for 32 points and also contributing seven rebounds and five steals.
Mongomo was a Canada West women’s basketball second-team all-star guard last season, the first T-wolf ever to make a U Sports all-star list. The native of Las Palmas, Spain, has been hampered by a knee injury but she had her radar working Saturday, playing on her home court at the Northern Sport Centre. She shot 11-for-17 from the field and 8-for-12 from three-point range.
Vasiliki Louka finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds and Madison Landry had seven assists and six points. Jessica Hanson paced the T-birds with 17 points.
The T-wolves wiped out a seven-point UBC lead after one quarter and led 36-34 at the half. With Mongomo shooting out the lights, Twolves guard Alina Skakirova did her job shadowing Maddison Penn, limiting the T-birds’ leading scorer to just seven points. The win left the T-wolves with a 2-4 record, while UBC dropped to 3-3. UNBC won 75-65 on Friday.
In the men’s game which followed at the NSC, the UBC T-birds completed a two-game sweep of the T-wolves, defeating the home side 104-72. Phil Jalalpoor provided a gamehigh 34 points and Conor Morgan hit for 22. Volodymyr Pluzhnikov led the UNBC cause with 17 points and four assists. Marcus MacKay had a 10-point game for the T-wolves.
The T-birds, who beat the T-wolves 100-85 on Friday, improved their sixth-place record to 4-2 while UNBC’s record fell to 2-4.
The T-wolves host the Regina Cougars this coming weekend.
Dan Stark of the UNBC Timberwolves looks for a play against the checking of UBC Thunderbird players Patrick Simon (11) and Anthony Monish (6) on Saturday night at the Northern Sport Centre. The T-birds completed a weekend sweep with a 104-72 win.
