Peewees golden in Kelowna
The Viking Construction Cougars claimed tournament gold in thrilling fashion last weekend in Kelowna.
The Cougars, a peewee Tier 1 rep team from the Prince George Minor Hockey Association, clashed with the Nanaimo Clippers in the championship game and won 5-4 in a shootout. Overall, the Cats posted a 4-1 record. They started with a 4-2 win against the Vancouver Thunderbirds, lost 8-5 to the Clippers, edged Coquitlam 4-3 and downed Juan de Fuca 5-4 in the playoff semifinal round.
The Cougars compete in the Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association. Their home tournament is Jan. 5-7.
This weekend, the Panago midget Tier 2 Cougars will host an eight-team event. Games will start on Friday at 8 a.m. at the Kin Centre. The first contest for the Cats will see them take on Chilliwack at 11 a.m. at Kin 1. Later that day, at 4:30 p.m., the Cougars will meet Fort St. John on the same ice surface.
Round-robin play continues for the Cougars at 8:45 a.m. Saturday (Kin 1) against Central Okanagan and they’ll meet Terrace at 6 p.m. at Kin 3.
The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at Kin 2.
