Cibulkova, Oudin out in Texas
GRAPEVINE, Texas — Second-seeded Dominika Cibulkova and Melanie Oudin both were upended in Wednesday’s secondround action at the inaugural $220,000 Texas Tennis Open, a U.S. Open tune-up.
Slovakian Cibulkova was defeated 6-3, 6-1 by Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko after 62 minutes on the hard courts at Hilton DFW Lakes Hotel. Bondarenko will now play fifth-seeded Sabina Lisicki, who bested Alberta Brianti in straight sets on Tuesday.
Wild-card Oudin fell to German qualifier Angelique Kerber, who posted a 6-3, 6-2 win. Kerber advanced to face Johanna Larsson.
Other winners on the day were France’s Aravane Rezai, who took down Romanian Sorana Cirstea by 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), and Latvian Anastasija Sevastova, a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 winner over Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson.
