Sea otter Milo dies of cancer

-

Milo, the Vancouver Aquarium’s sea otter and a worldwide Internet star, died Wednesday of cancer.

The otter was diagnosed in August with lymphoma, which the aquarium says was a first, and was being treated with chemotherapy, another first.

“Milo will greatly be missed and we thank everyone who has sent us positive wishes and thoughts over the past months,” said general manager Clint Wright.

Milo became a star beyond his Stanley Park water pool after video of he and another otter, Nyac, holding their paws together hit the Internet four years ago. The videos have been viewed 16 million times since.

Nyac died in 2008 of lymphocytic leukemia.

Milo, a male sea otter, was born in Portugal’s Lisbon Aquarium on Aug. 14, 1999, and came to Vancouver in September 2000.
