T-Birds keep streaking with quality win

- — Howard Tsumura

The UBC Thunderbirds don’t have many CIS Top 10 matchups in their soccer schedule as part of Canada West’s re-aligned Pacific Division.

Yet if you were wondering if the ’Birds would be able to respond when one of those types of games rolled around, you got your answer Friday.

Sean Einarsson scored all three of his team’s goals, tallying in the 52nd, 54th and 73rd minutes as CIS No. 2-ranked UBC blanked the visiting, No. 9-ranked Victoria Vikes 3-0 at Thunderbird Stadium.

Sitting at 7-0-1 in conference with four more regular season games remaining over the next two weekends, UBC is riding a seven-match win streak.

Overall, UBC is 9-1-3, its only loss a 2-1 setback Sept. 11 in Seattle against the Washington Huskies.

The Thunderbirds are on the road next week, playing at Thompson Rivers in Kamloops and UBC Okanagan in Kelowna before returning home to conclude the regular season with games Oct. 23-24 at Thunderbird Stadium against Langley’s Trinity Western Spartans and the Fraser Valley Cascades of Abbotsford.

UBC, the most decorated program in CIS men’s soccer, has won 14 national crowns, including two of the past three.

Canada West playoffs open Oct. 31, with the CIS national tournament set to run Nov. 12-15 at York University in Toronto.
