Students get to play basketball again at Liverpool High

U18 team hosts invitational tournament

A local U18 team is bringing basketball to Liverpool for a full slate of high paced action on March 3, 4, 5th at Liverpool Regional High School. Made up of players from Liverpool High and Shelburne High, the Sou’west Volunteers are welcoming teams from Amherst, Argyle, Yarmouth, Pugwash, Colchester, Shelburne County, and Halifax, opening up on Friday Night versus the defending Basketball Nova Scotia Division 1 Champion Clearwater Hustlers.

“The Hustlers play a high scoring, high octane type of basketball. We have played them a few times, and each time we are up against it. We expect them to come out firing on all cylinders” said Coach Josh Brown.

Coach Brown and the Sou’west Volunteers are one of dozens of teams that play under the Basketball Nova Scotia umbrella. Fortunately, this has meant that a lot of players have been able to continue playing basketball during the recent work to rule campaign, including several graduating players. The Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation determined on Wednesday, Feb. 22 that the Regional and Provincial Championships in basketball will not be contested for the 2016-2017 school year.

“You can’t fill that void. But with our own Provincial Championships on April 1st Weekend, and a partnership with Yarmouth to host another tournament in March, the kids get to lace them up and play with together – they are all friends first. Basketball brings them closer, I think.”

Liverpool residents Center Jared Warrington, small forward Andy Dixon, and guard Tetsuya Miyamoto will be defending their home court for the last time.

“I am so excited for this...literally the one thing I was asking for before I graduate was to play ball in Liverpool again,” says Warrington.

A hospitality table will be on site for light refreshments. Admission is by donation.
