Voting has never been this delicious.

That is the tagline for a national contest in which Tait’s Fresh Start is competing. The bake shop and deli on King Street West in downtown Brockville is vying for the title of Sweetest Bakery in Canada.

Voting opened on April 2 and will continue until July 31. The national winner will receive a prize package valued at $10,000.

Tait’s owner Jay Leroux noted in an interview on Monday that he had just sent in his first batch of paper ballots.

Customers’ comments included everything from loving Tait’s peanut butter balls to having just eaten the best sub ever.

Many of the positive comments in support of the Tait’s entry are about customer service and the friendly staff, according to Leroux.

“That makes me happier than anything,” he said.

The grand prize package includes $2,500 for advertising and a celebration party for staff and customers. There will also be eastern and western region prizes; each recipient will get a package valued at $2,500 and that includes a celebration party.

In noting there is an emphasis on the team environment at Tait’s, Leroux pointed out that customers are an important part of the team. The iconic Brockville business, which dates back to 1908, has a staff of about 20.

The bakery gets its name from the brief closure of Tait’s in 2015 before it reopened, much to the community’s relief, under new ownership later that year.

One online vote per device per day ispermittedatsweetestbakeryincanada.com; contest links and reminders are being posted regularly on the Tait’s Facebook page. Customers are also allowed to vote by paper ballot once a day at the shop. The ballot box is located near the till.

Leroux indicated that Tait’s had moved up two spots since the last time he checked. Tait’s was third in Ontario and 16th in Canada on Monday morning.

Although he observed that winning one of the prizes in the contest might be a long shot, Leroux is buoyed by the support Tait’s is receiving and would be proud to claim a national or even a regional title.
