The Recorder & Times (Brockville) - - SPORTS -

Brooke Henderson isn’t taking her foot off the gas pedal. The 21-year-old Smiths Falls native finished the opening day of the Evian Championship in France Thursday tied for fourth at four-under. Spain’s Carlota Ciganda is at the top of the leaderboard with a score of six-under. Henderson was strong on the day, collecting five birdies and a bogey. Four of those birdies came on the back nine. The Evian Championship is the last major event on the LPGA Tour. Henderson finished tied for ninth and tied for 25th in 2016 and 2015 at the Evian Championships, respectively. Last year’s tournament was shortened to 54 holes due to weather, and she finished tied for 58th. Henderson has played solid for most of the season, but has really turned things on as of late as she’s finished in the top-25 in her last seven events and won at the CP Women’s Open. She’s currently ranked third on the yearlong Race to the CME Globe. If she tops that points list after the CME Group Tour Championship, the final event of the year, she’ll win a $1-million bonus prize. Including the Evian Championships, there are eight events left on the LPGA schedule.
