Ange Gabriel might be a small school, but they had a lot of support Thursday night and its junior girls basketball team played a big game on way to beating the St. Mary Crusaders 42-8 in the A-division championship at St. Mary. The win earned Ange Gabriel its first-ever LGSSAA banner in the school’s history. AG came out of the gates flying and went up 10-0 within three minutes of the opening tip-off. St. Mary fell into an early hole and tried to get out of it using the three-point ball, but were unsuccessful. When the Crusaders attempted to go inside there was never an easy basket for them with AG playing strong defence. St. Mary didn’t score their first basket of the game until early in the third quarter. The wide point spread speaks more to how strong of a team Ange Gabriel is and has been all season with how quickly they move and spread the ball around on offence and communicate on defence. Aislinn Davey led the way for Ange Gabriel on the score sheet with 17 points. AG will head to Douglas, Ont. next Wednesday to compete in their first EOSSAA. Following the junior game, the St. Mary Crusaders won their second consecutive LGSSAA senior girls basketball A-division title after beating the St. Michael Mustangs. The senior finale was high scoring from the jump. St. Mary led from start to finish, but St. Michael didn’t give them any breathing room in the first quarter with the teams going basket-for-basket and the score was 19-14 after eight minutes. The Crusaders started to separate themselves after that and were up 18 points at halftime with Hannah Burt and Emily Dikdan combining for 12 points in the second quarter alone. Burt finished with a game-high 20 points. St. Michael outscored St. Mary in the fourth quarter with both teams getting their rosters on the floor, but by that point it was too late for the Mustangs to make a comeback. The Crusaders will head to Douglas, Ont for EOSSAA, which runs next Thursday and Friday. Shown in the left photo is Ange Gabriel’s Brooklyn Birch reaching for the ball during the junior game.
