Plane crash leaves lone oc­cu­pant dead

CROZET, Va. — Vir­ginia State Po­lice say the lone per­son aboard a small plane was killed when the air­craft crashed.

State Po­lice said Mon­day in a press re­lease that they’re still try­ing to iden­tify the body pulled from the wreck­age.

The twin-en­gine Cessna crashed about 9 p.m. Sun­day in Crozet,

19 km west of Char­lottesville, Va. State po­lice said the Fed­eral

Avi­a­tion Ad­min­is­tra­tion and the Na­tional Trans­porta­tion Safety Board are in­ves­ti­gat­ing.

Se­vere weather and tor­nado warn­ings had moved through­out the re­gion near the plane crash. Homes were de­stroyed. Thou­sands lost power.

Gov. Ralph Northam said on Twit­ter that he’s de­clared a state of emer­gency to help lo­cal and state agen­cies re­spond.

The Na­tional Weather Ser­vice is send­ing a team to Albe­marle County to de­ter­mine if a tor­nado caused the high winds.
