Hart Stores Inc. has set Sept. 30 as the date to open its new store at the Peninsula Mall in Marystown.

The store, located in the space vacated by Dominion earlier this year, includes roughly 19,000 square feet of retail floor space.

According to company president and chief executive officer Michael Hart, the Marystown store will employ between 30-40 full-time, part-time and temporary individuals.

He acknowledged a total renovation of the space in currently underway.

“ We’re gutting the store, from floor to ceiling to walls. It’s going to be complete- ly stripped and will be a brand new store. We’re there for a long time, as we usually plan to be, so we’re starting fresh.”

Hart, which also has stores under the ‘Bargain Giant’ banner, has stores in Clarenville, Grand Falls-Windsor, Lewisporte, Corner Brook, Bay Roberts, Carbonear, Port aux Basques and St. John’s in this province, totalling 91 locations throughout Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

Mr. Hart indicated the store carries a wide selection of fashion, house ware, footwear, giftware, seasonal, toys and accessories, citing the first two as Hart’s strengths.

He noted the company strives to be a little different than the other big box stores by offering good value, but a nicer selection of clothing.

The store also offers layaways, which many department stores have moved away from, as well as COD (cash on delivery) and ‘Club 55’, a promotion that gives a 15 per cent discount on regular price merchandise on the first Monday of every month to people over the age of 55.

The company, established with a single store in rural Quebec in 1960, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Mr. Hart recognized the company has been well received in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Referring to the other stores located throughout the province, he indicated “ We’ve got requests in the past to come into Marystown. It kind of completes the route.”
