Sacred Heart Academy in Marystown is closing in on its goal of constructing a new playground.

Recently the school was selected as one of the grand prize winners of the Aviva Community Fund.

The project was selected under the Community Health category in the up to $50,000 funding level.

“We were actually contacted a week before,” explained principal Cindy Pope. “Originally the message that we had was that they were looking at doing some site visits to some of the finalists.”

The project, a “Play Space with Heart” was announced among the list of 30 finalists back in November.

“So we prepared for a meeting, the playground committee and member of the school council, we met (at the school)” Pope said.

The funding selection committee suggested that they speak over the phone, noting that they were unable to visit all locations for what was being called a site visit.

“We thought the meeting was basically going to be us trying to sell our project,” said Pope, who added they had prepared to argue why it was important that the project be selected to receive the funding.

“Turned out it was just them notifying us that we actually were going to be a recipient,” said Pope.

She added that they were asked not to make it known until the organization had officially announced the grand prize winners on Dec. 6.

“As you can imagine we were quite excited, it was great news,” she said.

The school had applied last year in the $50,000 to $100,000 funding level but were unsuccessful in the application for funding.

Pope explained that prior to this, through fundraising efforts and other grants that they had received at the school, had raised approximately $46,000 to replace aging playground equipment.

They received most recently a $2,500 grant from the community health fund.

Last week they were notified by CLAC (Local 63) one of the students parents — Jamie Cull – put forth their name as a nominee for some of the awards they do as part of their better communities programs. So from the CLAC they received another $2,500.

The school also recently partnered with Scotia Bank 1for a matching grant. Pope explained that for every $5 ticket sold for this years Christmas concert, Scotia Bank matched it.

“It’s a nice fundraiser because it’s an event that we’re doing anyway,” she said.

Pope said they are hoping to have the new playground equipment in place before the end of the school year.

“If not, than for sure by the fall,” she said.
